PTK at SFSC Collect Children’s Books for Literacy Drive

The Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Tau Epsilon Chapter at South Florida State College (SFSC) held a literacy drive from Nov. 11–Dec. 11,  2024. With the help of students, faculty, staff, and community members, the Highlands Campus collected 262 books for children from birth to fifth grade, exceeding the goal of 200 books. Hardee, Lake Placid, and DeSoto campus locations participated as well with a large donation of books for each.

PTK would like to thank everyone who participated in this project that benefitted the Champion for Children Foundation.

“The Champion for Children Foundation is so grateful for these donated books to distribute to our children. Reading is a way for children to open their imagination to endless possibilities, dream big, go places while sitting in one place, and learn things they never knew,” said Kati Pippin, executive assistant and graphic designer for Champion for Children Foundation.

In total, the Champion for Children Foundation has assisted 4,976 children in our region. Some of the children were impacted through the services and programs offered in combination with some of its partner agencies. So far in 2024, they have directly served 632 children and hope to distribute the books at their client intake location and their Family Resource Center. They will be offered to families as they come in for services and offer families “goodie bags” filled with home essentials and small gifts. Families will have the option to pick out the books that best fit the reading preferences of their home. Books will also be given to families in need of gifts for their children. Also, Champion for Children has a little free library set up at the front of Sebring Middle School stocked for young readers.
