Highlands County Traffic Update

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) asked Highlands County Traffic Operations to change the operation of the traffic signal at the intersection of College Drive/Bill Sachsenmaier Memorial Drive and U.S. 27. This change will occur on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2024, at 10 a.m.

On the day of the switch, Traffic Ops. need to turn off the traffic signal at this intersection for a couple of hours while crews put the new operation into effect.

Motorists on College Drive and Bill Sachsenmaier Memorial Drive will only be able to turn right onto U.S. 27 until the signal is restored.

Motorists on U.S. 27 will not be able to turn left onto College Drive or Bill Sachsenmaier Memorial Drive until the signal is restored and will need to proceed to the next intersection and make a U-turn.

Turning off the traffic signal will enable crews to move around the median area in bucket trucks to complete the project quickly.

The left turn signal operation will change from a protected/permissible left turn to a protected left turn only from U.S. 27 onto both College Drive and Bill Sachsenmaier Memorial Drive.

The first picture shows a protected/permissible left turn light, which is the current setup.

The second picture shows a protected left turn-only light, which will be the new setup.
